T o the untrained eye, a striped shirt is a striped shirt. It’s the wardrobe piece many of us overlook, thanks to the plethora of options at our disposal, often overwhelming us in a sea of stripes. However, it should be noted that when building a timeless capsule wardrobe, the striped shirt has earned its stripes as a wardrobe staple, both for its ability to transition throughout seasons, and for its ready-to-wear appeal. Taking several style cues from the effortless women I encountered during my recent trip to Paris, I wanted to evoke that same feeling in my day-day wardrobe. The striped shirt, while at first seemingly obvious – perhaps, for some, a tad too obvious – remains a nod to classic Parisian style with its inherent visual interest, and countering simplicity.
Whether it be it from highstreet to high-end, one might feel inundated with options on what’s actually worth investing in. Ergo, allow me to make a case for why you should fork out on a quality striped shirt – aka, the minimalist’s must-have.

Making a case for quality designer brands.
Of the many things I adore about one designer brand in particular, Toteme, is that it’s a brand made for women, by women. Reminiscent of the ideals championed by Phoebe Philo’s Céline, Toteme presents to us pieces that empower us as women in whatever ways we choose to present ourselves. Toteme’s co-founder, Elin Kling, has created a brand that has catapulted its reach to an audience of over 200k on instagram – and, truth be told, its not hard to see why. Simply put, the brand exudes a quiet beauty through everything from the designs themselves, to the editorials, branding and hauntingly beautiful imagery.
Kling’s own personal instagram has also garnered much traction for those encumbered by the Toteme minimalist luxury appeal. When scouring the designer’s feed and her assortment of looks – be it paraded at beautiful European cafes, or a sunlit building facade – its her love for the classic button-down that I’m drawn to most. And what might be the key to finding the perfect shirt? Keep your checklist simple: Look for the best quality, pay attention to the fit (is it flattering), and look out for interesting details that make it possible to style and switch up the garment for any occasion.
Totême’s blue and white stripe shirt (available to shop via farfetch.com HERE), with it’s mandarin collar and bellow sleeves, make for an easy-wearing piece versatile enough for work, brunch, beach days and balmy sunset dinners.
Women are not one-dimensional, and their style needn’t be either.
For a casual weekend look, slip on a dark pair of straight leg denims, and loafers.
